This can be caused by climate change as well as the return of the meteorological phenomenon called “El Niño”. During “El Niño”, warm water moves eastward, raising the temperature of the ocean surface and usually leading to record temperatures worldwide. This phenomenon may occur in 2023-2024. Climate models assume that “El Niño” will return at the end of summer and could become very strong by the end of the year. Despite the fact that 2016 was the hottest year in the world in recorded history, even years without “El Niño” can become extremely hot due to climate change.
