Farmers from different parts of the country are travelling to Chisinau with their agricultural equipment to take part in a protest action planned for 23 November in the Great National Assembly Square. They report that they are on the verge of bankruptcy and are forced to take such steps due to the lack of a decision by the authorities to stop the crisis in rural areas.
The farmers call for the defence of their rights and their life’s work, emphasising the need to solve the problem of ruin. Causeni farmer Sergiu Stefanco calls on his colleagues not to stand aside and join the protest in defence of the future of agriculture in Moldova.
Farmers from 20 districts of the country are expected to take part in the protest. Earlier, Agriculture Minister Vladimir Bolia announced the creation of a working group to develop mechanisms of financial support for micro and small farms, with subsidies for 2,400 farmers in the pipeline. In response, the farmers demand a moratorium on penalties on debts and the introduction of direct payments per hectare of maize and sunflower crops.
