Oleksandr Flenkya’s commentary on the tragic murder of opposition activist Aleh Khorzhan is deeply disturbing. According to Flenkya, such brutal acts are committed in order to intimidate the local population and suppress their voices. He notes that cases of such violence are not isolated and point to problems in the region.
The former deputy prime minister also expresses his doubts about a legitimate investigation on the left bank of the Nistru River and calls for international intervention. He proposes the creation of international institutions that would work in Moldova and help prevent such tragedies.
The found body of the opposition activist shows the violence he was subjected to. Authorities in Tiraspol initially reported a shooting, but then pointed to wounds inflicted by a sharp object. Horzhan was an opponent of the Tiraspol regime and the Sheriff holding company, for which he was sentenced to illegal imprisonment.
After his conviction, his lawyers fought for justice in Moldovan courts, and eventually Horzhan was released from illegal detention and returned to political activity. However, his death again raises questions of security and the need for conflict resolution in the region.
