The Liberal Party decided not to participate in the presidential elections, but will support the referendum to be held on October 20. Such a decision was made at a meeting of the LP Council.
The Council discussed the issue of nominating a candidate, taking into account both the interests of the party and the state interests. In their opinion, the internal political situation has worsened due to Russia’s interference in Moldova’s affairs, including through propaganda and actions aimed at diverting the country from the European course. This is confirmed by the emergence of many independent candidates and new political parties.
The Council also noted that the situation on Moldova’s border is complicated due to Russia’s war with Ukraine and threats of invasion by Russian officials. Under such conditions, a president with pro-Russian views could halt EU accession negotiations. Therefore, it was decided not to nominate a PL candidate for the presidency.
