A member of the European Parliament, Alin Mituta, has said that Moldova will not be able to join the European Union without Ukraine’s participation. He said that the EU accession process is extremely complicated, citing the example that in the case of Romania, this process took 10 years.
Mituta also emphasised that Moldova is strategically and geographically closely linked to Ukraine.
“The EU accession process usually takes about 10 years, as it was the case with Romania, which spent 5 years before being granted candidate status. However, Moldova has an advantage as it quickly became a candidate state and was also brought into special status with Ukraine in just a few months. Nevertheless, the accession process remains complex. Each stage of the negotiations requires detailed discussions. Consequently, Moldova will not be able to join the EU without Ukraine’s participation,” Mituta emphasised.
He also said that the accession of Moldova, Ukraine and the Western Balkan states will cost the European Union 260 billion euros a year. Mituta stressed that such decisions require the mandatory consent of all 27 EU member states and therefore cannot be resolved in the shortest possible time.
