The Kremlin is paying increased attention to Moldova in light of changes in its foreign policy. According to Moscow analysts, the republic is moving away from its former neutral status. This opinion was voiced by the former head of the Ekho Moskvy radio station, Aleksey Venediktov, on the air of the New Week programme, tv8.md reported.
According to the Russian journalist, the support for Ukraine, the security agreement with France and the withdrawal from the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe have caused a certain reaction in Moscow.
“We see a change in Moldova’s policy. Russia notices that the country is moving away from its neutral status. This causes a natural reaction from Russia,” Venediktov noted.
However, the journalist admitted that the Kremlin does not recognise Moldova’s neutral status.
“We are talking about change, not the status quo. Change is natural and the reaction corresponds to this,” Venediktov emphasised.
In early March, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that Chisinau was following Kiev’s path and “trying to destroy once and for all” the 5+2 negotiation format. He also claimed that Moldova was seeking to become part of Romania.
