Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov has expressed his opinion on the statement by Moldovan Energy Minister Victor Parlikov on the cessation of gas purchases from Gazprom. Peskov emphasised that contacts between Moldova and Gazprom are important, especially given the debts of the Moldovan side to the Russian gas company.
He also said that Moldova is likely to continue buying Russian gas, but now on the spot market. However, this may be a volatile option, as the prices on the spot market may fluctuate significantly and end up being higher than the contracted gas price.
Peskov also specified that the issue of gas supplies to Transnistria, given the refusal of the Moldovan authorities to use Gazprom’s services, requires attention and settlement. He suggested asking Gazprom for details.
For his part, Moldovan Energy Minister Victor Parlicov said that the country intended to obtain gas from alternative sources on the European market at a more favourable price than under the contract with Gazprom.
