Former President Igor Dodon, leader of the Socialist Party, reminded that part of the current territory of Ukraine once belonged to Moldova. He expressed this while commenting on statements made by Călin Georgescu, the former presidential candidate of Romania, who recently spoke about territorial claims toward Ukraine.
Dodon said: “I want to remind the politicians in Europe and Romania who are already dividing Ukraine’s lands. First of all, these lands are historically Moldovan. There are still hundreds of thousands of Moldovans living there who speak the Moldovan language. Secondly, Soviet Moldova was deprived of its status as a maritime power when the south and north of the country were taken from us through an illegal decision in the middle of the last century, during the so-called Khrushchev reform.”
He added that the issue of territorial disputes should be left in the past and that revanchist rhetoric should be avoided.
Furthermore, Dodon called for a swift end to the war in Ukraine, stating that it is a tragedy for all nations, including Moldovans. He does not support the position of Moldova, recently expressed by President Maia Sandu, regarding supporting Ukraine in the conflict, and emphasized that peace must be achieved through negotiations.
