It is unclear who will be responsible for the possible failure of the referendum if it is held on the same day as the presidential election. The co-chairman of the League of Cities and Communes (LOC) Alexandru Bujoryan said.
According to him, LOC supports the initiative to hold the referendum, but warns the authorities about the risks related to the chosen time for this event.
On the other hand, PDS MP Inna Kosheru said that the ruling party supports President Maia Sandu’s proposal and the referendum on EU accession will reflect the will of the people.
Bujorian noted that the LOC-Platform DA-Party of Change-CUB political bloc also supports the idea of the referendum, but expressed doubts about holding it on the same day as the presidential elections.
He drew attention to the fact that the referendum can mobilise both pro-European and pro-Russian electorate, which brings additional risks.
Inna Kosheru also supported her point of view, considering that the referendum should confirm the people’s desire for European integration, especially after the European Council’s decision to start accession negotiations.
In this connection, the deputies of the Communist and Socialist Bloc asked the Constitutional Court to verify the legality of holding a republican referendum on the same day as parliamentary or presidential elections.
