The situation in Moldova before the upcoming presidential election is becoming increasingly unstable, expert Vladimir Socor believes. He expressed this opinion during the program “New Week with Anatol Golya” on tv8.md. In his opinion, Russia actively seeks to prevent Moldova from moving closer to the European Union, using for this purpose various groups under its control.
Russia’s goal is not only to prevent Moldova’s integration with the EU, but also to create an environment in which the country becomes a less attractive partner for the European Union. Socor notes that such an active campaign to destabilize the republic has become unique over the past three decades.
According to the expert, Russia is concerned about the pro-European sentiment in the Moldovan government, as well as the slow but noticeable derusification in the country. In addition, Russia fears the loss of influence in Moldova, which could happen in case of its full integration with the European Union. That is why, according to Socor, the Kremlin is making maximum efforts to thwart the current trends in Moldova.
Moldova’s Information and Security Service said Russia is trying to influence the upcoming electoral processes in the country. The head of the ISS, Alexandru Mustiatse, said that the Kremlin is trying to disrupt the EU accession referendum, interfere in the presidential election and discredit politicians who support integration with the European Union. There was no official comment from Russia on these accusations.
