On the International Day of Older Persons, which is celebrated annually on 1 October, President Maia Sandu stressed the importance of communication between different generations to build a strong society.
“On this International Day of Older Persons, I want us to appreciate the richness of the life experience of older people. It is like a treasure trove of lessons learnt, stories lived and wisdom accumulated over the years. Let us allow new generations to learn from these experiences. Let us build bridges and avoid ruptures that weaken our society,” the president said.
Sandu also urged to remember our elderly loved ones and spend more time with them, even if we are far away. She stressed the importance of calling and talking to elderly relatives and neighbours whom we rarely visit.
The President noted that the National Active and Healthy Ageing Programme was approved in June this year, which seeks to facilitate older people’s access to social, health and cultural services. She also emphasised the importance of involving older persons in the workplace and in decision-making at all levels in order to ensure an active and dignified old age.
