Vegetable growers in Moldova may lose part of their onion crop due to long April rains. Some onion crops were not protected against weeds and will have to be replanted. Although crop losses are not widespread across the country, they are concerning. Last year, Moldovan farmers purchased 30% more onion seeds than the previous year. In 2022, in Moldova, no more than 2-2.5 thousand hectares were cultivated for onion production. In Ukraine, vegetable farmers were able to plant onions only in some southern regions of the country. This means that in some areas of Ukraine, there may not be an excess of local onion production, considering the ongoing conflict and the announced counteroffensive by the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Therefore, Moldova may continue to actively supply onions to the Ukrainian market this year, as well as last year. In 2022, 8 thousand tons of onions were exported from Moldova to Ukraine.
