A tragedy occurred near the town of Sofia in the Drocia district: a 13-year-old boy drowned in an irrigation reservoir. This happened on May 21 during the day. According to information received from the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations (IGSU), the boy went swimming with two friends of the same age.
The boy entered the water and dived, but did not resurface. The friends who remained on the shore quickly went to the village for help. A local resident attempted to find the child but was unsuccessful.
Rescue teams arrived at the scene and discovered the boy’s body on the same day at 16:32.
The circumstances of this incident will be investigated.
In light of this incident, IGSU warns those responsible for minors that swimming without adult supervision is not permissible.
Furthermore, rescuers urge residents to choose recreational water bodies with lifeguard stations for swimming, rather than using ponds and irrigation reservoirs. To avoid dangerous situations, people are also advised to be cautious and not swim in unfamiliar lakes and rivers.
Since the beginning of 2023, a total of 18 people have died in the country’s water bodies, including 2 minors.
