After Ilan Shor, a former MP and political fugitive, was finally convicted, the Moldovan authorities sent a request to Israel for his extradition. Despite requests from Israeli courts for further clarifications, the Moldovan prosecutor’s office has yet to receive a response. This was announced by the head of the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (AP), Veronica Dragalin, at a press club.
Veronica Dragalin said that the extradition request for Ilan Shor was sent back in 2020. However, after he was convicted at the Chisinau Court of Appeal, an additional request was needed. The extradition procedure is in the competence of the Justice Ministry after a person is convicted, and the AP co-operates with this institution.
The AP head also said that there were several discussions with Israeli colleagues, who asked for additional clarifications. They were interested in the connection between the episode on which he was convicted and other aspects of the investigation. Veronica Dragalin explained that Shor had been convicted for the events that took place in November 2014, but had the status of an accused in other episodes as well.
As for the former leader of the Democratic Party Vlad Plahotniuc, who allegedly left the country after the change of power in 2019, Veronica Dragalin said that there is no new information. The law enforcers asked to place the information with Interpol, but were refused regarding the fulfilment of this request by Moldova, and therefore the prosecutors have no information about his whereabouts.
