Janis Mazeix expressed the opinion that Moldova could join the European Union by 2030 if the country continues to carry out reforms at the same pace as in the last two years. He expressed this position in an interview with the Ukrainian source Suspilne before the International Summit of Mayors, which was held in Chisinau.
At the moment, the accession issue is at the stage of approval in the parliaments of the EU member states, but Mazeix does not make predictions about their movement.
Mazeix said that the EU supports Moldova’s accession to the EU together with Transnistria, but emphasized the importance of the government in Chisinau as the only negotiating partner. He also expressed a preference for accession of all of Moldova, including Transnistria, although he acknowledged the possibility of a two-stage process, starting with the right bank controlled by Chisinau.
In addition, Mazeix emphasized that challenges such as bringing Ukrainian courts into line with European standards and fighting corruption are also facing Ukraine.
