Romanian President Klaus Iohannis has announced his support for the proposal to start accession talks between Moldova and Ukraine at the European Council meeting to be held in December this year. He expressed this position at a joint press conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky during his official visit to Bucharest.
Iohannis emphasised that he would personally actively support this decision at the European Council. He said that such a step would be a confirmation of Ukraine’s and Moldova’s progress despite difficult circumstances and is of strategic importance for the European Union.
At the same time, the Romanian president stressed that it is also important to fully implement the necessary reforms to prepare Ukraine and Moldova for EU membership, in order to ensure the stability and sustainability of these countries.
Regarding the Ukrainian conflict, Iohannis expressed his support for the “peace formula” proposed by President Zelenski and believes that the decision on peace talks should be taken by Ukraine itself.
