The completed rape case of a 14-year-old girl in the capital’s Valya Trandafirilor Park has raised the issue of public indifference. According to one of the witnesses to the incident, when the girl screamed for help, people nearby simply ignored her pleas.
A woman who witnessed the incident said that the park was lively but no one present reacted to the girl’s cries, including several men. She and two other girls heard the girl’s voice desperately pleading to be left alone. They approached her and tried to calm her down, but the suspect ran away. The man was then apprehended by a Carabinieri patrol enforcing public order in the area.
The girl, who was in a state of shock, was turned to the police, where a criminal case of indecent assault was initiated. The suspect was detained for 72 hours. The minor girl was also referred for forensic examination.
This case caused public excitement and raised the important issue of the need for people to be more proactive in responding to such situations in order to protect each other’s safety and well-being, especially in cases of aggression and violence.
