A Romanian expert has warned of possible risks associated with the truce in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, which could affect both Ukraine and Moldova. Mihai Isac, an expert from Romania, expresses fears about the possibility of stopping the fighting, as this could give the Kremlin time to strengthen its resources and prepare for a new attack.
Isac emphasises the importance of continued Western military support for Ukraine to prevent Russia from rebuilding its forces during the ceasefire. He also points to the risk of intensifying Russian operations against the constitutional authorities in Chisinau, the capital of Moldova, in case of a pause on the front.
The expert stresses that even if a truce is concluded, Russia can use this period to prepare new attacks and destabilise the situation in Moldova. According to him, a decrease in the intensity of the war in Ukraine could lead to an increase in Russia’s influence in Moldova, which could affect the results of the upcoming elections in 2024 and 2025.
Isac warns that a possible freezing of the conflict in Ukraine could create additional pressure on Moldova, as Russia will use the time to increase its support for pro-Kremlin forces in Chisinau. He predicts that a pro-Russian majority in Moldova’s parliament could hinder the country’s European path, which would become a serious threat in the run-up to the elections.
