Nicolae Stefanuta, vice chairman of the European Parliament, said in a program on Radio Moldova that Transnistria would not prevent Moldova from joining the EU. He said that even though there were frozen conflicts in other countries, such as Cyprus, it was not a barrier to their membership in the Union.
“It is not the most important thing. Yes, some countries mention this issue, but it should not be the main obstacle to joining. We would not have started negotiations if it was a condition for exclusion,” Stefanutse said.
The European Union officially started accession talks with Moldova and Ukraine on June 25. The first results of these negotiations are expected next year. The authorities in Chisinau aim to become a member of the EU by 2030.
