The Ministry of Environment and the Moldsilva Agency, under the leadership of the President of Moldova, announced the launch of the National Forest Plantation Programme from 11 November 2023. This programme aims to restore and create new forests with a total area of 145 thousand hectares within 10 years (from 2023 to 2032), according to moldpres.md.
Today, in the current year, the campaign takes place in November and December 2023. Preparations for it included the treatment of areas for planting forests on an area of 4 thousand hectares and inventory in forest nurseries. According to the environmental authorities, about 35 million saplings are available for planting.
The ministry urges all the country’s residents to take part in the green works, as the success of such a large-scale project depends on the participation of the whole society.
In the next 10 years, Moldova’s forest areas will be expanded by about 150 thousand hectares, including new lands and badly damaged forest lands, both publicly and privately owned. These measures are stipulated in the National Programme of Forest Expansion and Reforestation for the period from 2023 to 2032, initiated by President Maia Sandu.
The Moldovan government claims that this programme benefits agriculture by improving the humidity and changing the appearance of the country’s rural areas.
