From July onwards, there will be increased fines for drivers who disregard pedestrians and cyclists, as well as for those who exceed the speed limit. Depending on the severity and recurrence of the offense, drivers may risk losing their driver’s license. For instance, drivers who fail to yield to pedestrians or cyclists will face fines of up to 1,800 lei and accumulate 5 penalty points. If the violation is repeated within a year, the fine will be raised to 2,500 lei, and the offender will have their driving privileges suspended for 30-45 days. Previously, fines ranged from 900 to 1,500 lei with 4 penalty points for violating right of way.
Exceeding the speed limit by more than 40 km/h will result in fines ranging from 1,500 to 1,800 lei, with 5 penalty points. Drivers who exceed speeds of 60-80 km/h will be fined between 2,250 and 2,500 lei and have their driver’s license suspended for 30-45 days. If the speed is exceeded by 80 km/h or more, the fine will range from 3,750 to 5,000 lei, with a suspension of driving privileges for 60-90 days.
Repeatedly exceeding the speed limit by 60-80 km/h within one year will incur a fine of 5,000 to 7,500 lei and a suspension of driving privileges for 90-120 days. For repeated speeding over 80 km/h or more within the same year, the fine will be between 7,500 and 10,000 lei, and the driver’s license will be suspended for 120-180 days.
Currently, drivers operating unregistered vehicles or those that have not passed the required technical inspection will be fined between 460 and 600 lei, without accruing 3 penalty points.
Drivers who fail to comply with priority signs and road markings will either receive a warning or be fined 500 to 600 lei, along with 2 penalty points.
The fines for improper parking or parking in prohibited areas remain the same, ranging from 900 to 1,500 lei, but without accumulating 4 penalty points.
