Presidential candidates Maia Sandu and Alexandru Stoianoglo met today for a moderator-free electoral debate at the Palace of the Republic. Alexandru Stoianoglo was asked questions, including how he plans to convince people that he can be a good president.
“I was an exemplary prosecutor general. During my time, those involved in the theft of a billion and other crimes were held accountable. This is confirmed by a report prepared by experts appointed by you, regarding the establishment of the Consultative Committee for Combating Corruption at the Presidency of the Republic of Moldova on June 10, 2021. This committee concluded that in 2021, the most cases of bank fraud were sent to court. All my actions during that period were based on the Declaration adopted in June 2019, by you,” said Stoianoglo.
We remind you that Alexandru Stoianoglo was suspended from the position of prosecutor general for illegal enrichment. On October 5, 2021, he was detained in the building of the Prosecutor’s Office. He does not acknowledge his guilt. On September 26, 2023, President Maia Sandu signed a decree releasing Stoianoglo from his position. The first round of the presidential elections in Moldova took place on October 20, and the second round will be held on November 3.
