Russia’s President’s Press Secretary, Dmitry Peskov, commenting on the presidential elections in Moldova, stated that Maia Sandu cannot be considered the legitimate president because many citizens did not vote for her. According to Peskov, hundreds of thousands of Moldovans living in Russia were deprived of the opportunity to vote, unlike those living in the EU, reports gazeta.ru.
Peskov said that the elections in Moldova were neither fair nor democratic, and were full of vote manipulation.
“As for Sandu, she is not the president because many citizens of Moldova did not support her in the elections. As for the current Moldovan leadership, they have shown no interest in developing good relations with our country,” he added.
Peskov also pointed out that many residents of Transnistria were unable to vote during the elections.
“We see that there is no constructive approach to this issue in Chisinau… The residents of Transnistria clearly do not support the Moldovan authorities,” the press secretary said.
Earlier, Germany condemned Russia for its “massive and coordinated attempt” to prevent Moldovans living abroad from voting in the second round of the presidential elections. Germany’s Foreign Minister stated that the threats of explosions at polling stations in German cities show that Putin “will stop at nothing.”
