The head of the Our Party party, Renato Usatii, believes it is possible that the planned referendum on Moldova’s accession to the European Union, initiated by the country’s president, may be cancelled. Usatii expressed his position during the Rezoomat programme on the RLIVE TV channel. He said that it might be up to the Constitutional Court to decide on this issue, as there is a fear that the referendum will not be successful. The politician also said that the referendum initiative might be related to President Sandu’s desire to mobilise voters before the upcoming elections. Usatii said that he personally does not support the idea of the referendum, as he has always been in favour of national development.
The referendum on Moldova’s accession to the European Union was proposed by President Maia Sandu in December 2023, and she has expressed her desire to hold it on the day of the presidential election to maximise voter activism. However, a final decision on the matter is awaited from the Constitutional Court. Sandu also emphasised her desire for the future president to actively support Moldova’s European agenda.
