The head of the Foreign Ministry said that Russia is using the democratic process in Moldova to destabilize the country, applying hybrid warfare tactics. Mihai Popşoi, the head of Moldovan diplomacy, expressed his opinion in an interview with the Washington Post, emphasizing that Putin has imperial ambitions and seeks to revive the Soviet Union.
Popşoi also said that the question is not about Russia’s invasion, but about its ability to carry it out. He emphasized that Moldova’s survival as a democracy depends on Ukraine’s resistance.
Russia is currently waging a hybrid war in Moldova, using various means of intervention, except for a direct military attack. This includes attempts to organize a coup d’état, fake protests and disinformation.
According to the interview, there has been a recent consolidation of Shor’s criminal group with pro-Russian Moldovan “opposition leaders” in Moscow. This group is planning to run in the fall elections, led by billionaire Ilan Shor, convicted of corruption.
Popşoi notes that U.S. aid has helped Moldova reduce its dependence on Russian energy resources and acquire alternative energy sources such as liquefied natural gas from the United States.
In its interview, WP calls for more attention from the U.S. and its partners, including investment in Moldova’s infrastructure, support for countering Russian disinformation, and building alliances to ensure security and stability in the region.
