The chairman of the parliamentary Commission for Economy, Budget and Finance, Radu Marian, has expressed an opinion on the possible reduction of the gas tariff in the near future. He noted that changes in the gas price may affect the cost for consumers. The authorities, he said, cannot manage the gas prices, but they can help citizens to cope with high tariffs by partially compensating them.
Marian emphasised that Moldova depends on international gas prices and has no possibility to influence them. He also mentioned that over the last three years, the state has allocated significant sums to compensate the tariffs, helping those who face high gas bills. He also mentioned that the likely tariff reduction will not be used for political purposes.
Marian said that if the international gas price falls, it could lead to additional tariff cuts in the coming months. He assured that this decision will not be linked to the election campaign. He added that Moldova has switched to buying gas from international markets, which makes it possible to avoid Russian blackmail.
On 23 February, new gas tariffs for household consumers came into force. Now they pay 13.39 lei per cubic metre of gas without VAT.
