Moldova may face power outages due to attacks on Ukraine. The only high-voltage line through which the country imports electricity from Romania passes through Ukraine and is under threat from Russian missile strikes on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.
Currently, Moldova can only import 315 MW of electricity from Romania, which is not enough to meet peak demand. This line, connecting Isaccea to Vulcănești, is vulnerable because it crosses Ukrainian territory.
Additionally, due to the lack of natural gas from “Gazprom”, the Cuciurgan thermal power plant will not be able to produce the required amount of electricity as it did before. Even if the deficit is covered, the price of electricity will rise significantly, especially for residents on the left bank of the Dniester.
The Isaccea-Vulcănești line is the only 400 kV line through which Moldova can import electricity. There are also four other 100 kV lines that have been activated to operate in isolation.
