MPs have finally passed a bill that would allow citizens of six countries – the United States, Canada, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Iceland – to participate in elections through the postal service. Fifty-seven deputies voted in favor of the bill.
The document defines the process of voting by mail, detailed election procedures and the powers of electoral bodies, deschide.md reported.
The authorities note that the details of electoral procedures, including the protection and storage of votes, as well as ensuring the integrity of postal ballot envelopes, will be defined in a special regulation approved by the Central Electoral Commission.
Therefore, it is planned to conduct a pilot project on voting by mail in the above-mentioned countries. Citizens will have to register to vote by mail and will be notified by the Central Election Commission after completing the registration procedure. Ballot papers will be sent to voters by diplomatic pouch or regular postal services. The document also contains rules for counting votes and situations in which ballots are invalidated.
