Representatives of “Moldova Railways” say that ticket prices are too low, and because of this, the company is suffering losses. This statement about ticket price increases comes after two domestic routes were canceled for the same reason, reports tv8.md.
“For example, if we travel to Ungheni, it’s 107 kilometers, and the ticket costs about 90 lei, while we are currently transporting passengers for only 27 lei. This is not normal; we can’t make a profit if we transport people almost for free. We will probably need to raise the price by double, so people will pay more for a trip to Ungheni. We are still evaluating the situation,” said the interim director of Moldova Railways, Serghei Tomșa.
Over the weekend, “Moldova Railways” canceled the “Chișinău – Bender” and “Chișinău – Răgăzeni” routes because they were not profitable.
Currently, the company is going through a severe financial crisis, with wage debts exceeding 160 million lei. Employees haven’t been paid since July and are threatening to start mass protests if the issue is not resolved in the coming weeks.
