The bell has rung again in the Soroca Fortress after 400 years, following the restoration of the iconostasis in the Saint George Chapel. The iconostasis was gifted by Christians from the Romanian city of Rădăuți. For now, only a small bell will ring in the fortress. Viktor Butnaru, the director of the Soroca History and Ethnography Museum, said that the bell was removed during the restoration works, and now, after the completion of the second phase of the restoration, it has been returned to its place.
“This iconostasis is a true gift, a work of art, which came to us from Rădăuți, the cradle of Moldova,” said Butnaru.
The bell installed in the fortress rang there for the first time. “It can be said that the walls of the fortress haven’t heard the sound of the bell for nearly 400 years, since the reign of Vasile Lupu,” he added. For now, there is only one small bell in the fortress, but more are expected to be installed in the future.
