The driver who hit a student at a crosswalk in 2021 has been sentenced to a three-year suspended sentence and ordered to pay 500,000 lei in compensation. The decision was issued by Buiucan Court in the capital on July 28.
According to the verdict, the driver was found guilty of violating traffic rules, which led to the reckless infliction of serious harm to health. He received a three-year suspended sentence with a probation period of 3 years as well. If the conditions of the probation period are met, he will avoid serving the real punishment.
The court also ordered the driver to pay 500,000 lei in favor of the injured student for the harm to her health.
However, the prosecutor’s office believes that the sentence is too lenient and plans to appeal it.
According to the charges presented by the prosecutor’s office, the defendant violated traffic rules on August 10, 2021, when he hit a pedestrian who was crossing the road at a crosswalk. The student suffered serious injuries and spent a month in a coma.
It is important to note that the verdict is not final and can be appealed to the Chisinau Court of Appeal within 15 days. Until the driver’s guilt is proved by a legal court decision, he is considered innocent.
