They want it to be 5850 lei from 1 June 2023. The National Commission for Consultation and Collective Negotiation began work on 5 May. Trade unions said the previous request from the National Confederation of Trade Unions and the National Confederation of Employers regarding the minimum wage needs to be reviewed. They insist that it should be 5850 lei from 1 June 2023. Employers proposed that it should be 5000 lei from 1 January 2024.
Trade unions presented several reasons for increasing the minimum wage nationwide. They said that the socio-economic situation is poor due to high inflation (30.2% in 2022) and a decrease in real wages (by 10.3% over the same period).
During the call to participants in the May 1, 2023 rally, trade union activists demanded that the minimum wage be set at 50% of the average wage in the economy in accordance with the Revised European Social Charter and the EU Directive on Adequate Minimum Wage in the European Union.
Starting from January 1, 2023, the minimum wage in the country was increased to 4000 lei. Trade union activists requested it to be at least 5000 lei.
