Closing the border between Ukraine and Moldova would be a big problem and should be avoided. This was stated by Ukrainian Ambassador to Moldova Marko Shevchenko in the program “New Week with Anatoliy Golya” on TV8.
He said: “I hope that we will not allow such a scenario, because the peoples of Ukraine and Moldova are wise enough. Both countries, as well as our political leaders, have long ago determined that moving towards Europe is our natural way of development.”
He said integration with Europe means simplifying borders, not closing them. “We must move in this very direction. Closing the borders would be a catastrophe,” the ambassador emphasized.
Earlier, however, Marco Shevchenko, who will soon complete his work in Moldova, suggested that the border could be closed if pro-Russian parties come to power in the country.
Ukrainian presidential adviser Mykhailo Podolyak told TV8 in June that Ukraine has no plans to close the border with Moldova. He is sure that pro-Russian forces will not be able to win the upcoming election in Moldova.
