In the first week of 2024, the Moldovan leu appreciated by 6.1 per cent against the euro and the dollar compared to the same period of the previous year. Viitorul economic expert Veaceslav Ionita considers this as the most significant appreciation in recent years. He also stresses that over the last 8 years, the Moldovan leu has strengthened six times and depreciated only twice.
At the beginning of this year, the official exchange rate of the Moldovan leu was 19.27 lei per euro, which is 1.07 lei less than a year ago. Against the US dollar, the leu started at 17.54 lei per dollar, 1.63 lei less than at the beginning of 2023.
The expert also notes that at present, the Moldovan leu is stronger than the euro by 5.3%, which represents the maximum appreciation in the last 8 years. Against the US dollar, the leu appreciated by 8.5%, the second time in the last 8 years, which makes it more balanced compared to the last years.
