“Reducing the flow of refugees from Ukraine to Moldova: New measures of support and adaptation”
A large number of Ukrainian refugees have already left Moldova, many have gone to the European Union and some have returned home. For those who are still in the country and lived in disbanded refugee centers, the authorities have introduced new support measures.
Moldovan authorities together with Western partners have launched a financial assistance program for those refugees who want to rent accommodation. Due to the decreasing number of guests in the former accommodation centers, some people will be transferred to similar institutions, while others will be given the opportunity to rent accommodation. This will be supported by the state, but with a limit of 275 euros per month.
Deutsche Welle journalists noted that conditions in one of the refugee centers have become unsatisfactory, although social services, medical care and food are still provided to the residents. The number of people in such centers has decreased by 10 times, making their maintenance unprofitable.
The Moldovan Ministry of Labor and Social Protection stressed that the new rental housing program does not force refugees, but only provides an additional option. Those who wish can stay in the centers. The authorities aim to integrate able-bodied and self-reliant refugees into Moldovan society by providing them with adaptation support.
This rental program is designed for six months, but an extension is possible. There are currently about 80,000 refugees from Ukraine in Moldova, who receive monthly assistance of about 110 euros from the UN Refugee Agency.
