The driver who in February hit two cyclists, one of whom died, was sentenced. He was sentenced to 6 years in prison and deprived of the right to drive vehicles. He will also have to pay 1.5 million lei in moral damages to the families of the victims.
The father of the deceased boy was present at the trial and said that he would appeal the court’s decision at the Court of Appeal. He disagreed with the verdict, believing that Moldovan laws should be adapted and amended to meet European standards. The father noted the inconsistency of the sentence with other similar cases in the country.
The family of the victimized boy also attended the trial. The boy is now undergoing a lengthy and expensive rehabilitation course. The boy’s mother also expressed her dissatisfaction with the court’s decision and stated that the driver never tried to contact them or provided an apology for what happened.
The accident occurred in late February near Stavchen. The driver, driven by a man, had his driver’s license revoked after he was caught driving under the influence of alcohol. Despite this, he continued driving and caused an accident that resulted in the death of one of the teenagers in hospital.
