European countries plan to start official talks on Moldova and Ukraine becoming EU members on 25 June. The information about this was confirmed by five diplomats, citing data from the European bureau of the Politico newspaper.
Behind the scenes, diplomats from the EU and Ukraine are actively working, trying to persuade the Hungarian government to give its consent to the start of negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the EU. They are discussing the problems of Hungarian minorities in Ukraine, according to the newspaper.
EU leaders expressed their desire for Ukraine and Moldova to join the EU in December 2023. However, the official procedure to start the talks was delayed due to Hungary’s position.
An EU diplomat suggested that Hungary might try to delay Ukraine’s accession talks until it assumes the presidency of the EU Council in July.
On 17 May, Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said that the country had prevented the European Council from adopting a resolution on Ukraine.
