In memory of the victims of the tragic incident at Chisinau airport: Moldova declares July 4 as National Mourning Day
In solidarity with the families and loved ones of the victims, President Maia Sandu signed a decree declaring July 4, 2023, as National Mourning Day. On this day, the state flags will be lowered in all Moldovan settlements and Moldovan missions abroad. A minute of silence will be held at 12:00 p.m. to commemorate the victims.
Public authorities, enterprises and organizations are advised to cancel mass entertainment events and the mass media should take into account the peculiarities of July 4 when editing publications and compiling programs.
President Maia Sandu also signed a decree on posthumously awarding Igor Chiofu, reserve lieutenant colonel of the Guard and State Protection Service, and Serghei Munteanu, deputy head of the Border Police of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, with the medal “For Military Merit”.
Recall that on June 30, a citizen of Tajikistan opened fire at Chisinau International Airport. The Fulger special forces detained the attacker shortly after the incident. A border guard and an airport security officer were killed in the attack. The shooter at Chisinau airport was wanted for kidnapping a banker in Dushanbe in June 2023.
