Prosecutor Victoria Furtune, who previously worked at the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office, announced on social media the launch of a project called “Engines of Corruption”. She said that the main goal of the project is to identify and discuss the structures that play a key role in spreading corruption in various spheres and to inform the public about it.
As part of this project, she presented a list of the main drivers of corruption in Moldova:
1. Prevetting/Vetting process, which allows influencing the judiciary and prosecutor’s office by appointing loyal officials to positions, which facilitates abuse of power.
2. Illegal operations in the acquisition and transportation of natural gas, including non-compliance with laws in the conclusion of lease agreements for gas transportation networks.
3. Problems in public procurement caused by the lack of solutions to the problem of public tenders, leading to scandals over overpriced public works.
4. Activities of certain external donors, especially the EBRD, which offer investments and loans in various areas, but set high interest rates and inefficient conditions for the state.
5. Loss of state property due to inefficient management and lack of strategic vision, which leads to huge losses from the budget.
Victoria Furtune noted that the aim of the project is to draw public attention to these problems and initiate actions to solve them.
