At a press briefing, MPs from the Communist and Socialist Bloc, Alla Darovnaia and Volodymyr Odnostalko, discussed the alarming demographic situation this year. They expressed their concern by initiating amendments regarding childcare allowances. The proposal is that children up to 5 years of age (including twins and children born from the same pregnancy) should be paid allowances, not only up to 2 years of age, as it is now.
They also noted that most EU member states provide benefits to families with children up to 18 years of age, and this could be a useful example for Moldova. However, given the current capacity of the state, the transition to this goal should be gradual and reasonable.
Data from the National Bureau of Statistics for 2023 indicate a serious demographic crisis in the country, with increasing mortality and decreasing birth rates. Last year, mortality exceeded the number of births by about 10 thousand.
